Statement Regarding Social Media Posts
Posted Date: 08/31/26 (12:45 PM)
Mounds Public Schools would like to inform our families and community that, at this time, we have not received any reports of threats on social media directed toward our district, schools, staff, or students.
We want our families to be aware that other area schools and districts across the country have recently received reports of threats connected to a viral social media trend often referred to as "Cat in the Hat." This trend involves AI-generated or edited images and videos of the character, frequently paired with threatening or intimidating messages, and in some cases naming specific schools, students, or locations. This appears to be a nationwide issue, and several districts in other states have responded with increased law enforcement presence, building sweeps, or precautionary safety measures after posts referencing their schools surfaced online.
While Mounds Public Schools has not identified any posts referencing our district, we are closely monitoring the situation and remain in contact with local law enforcement.
The safety and security of our students and staff is our highest priority. We take any report of a potential threat—whether on social media or through any other means—extremely seriously, and we work closely with local law enforcement to investigate and respond to any concerns that arise.
We encourage parents, students, and community members to continue to be vigilant. If you see or hear of anything concerning on social media or elsewhere—including posts referencing this trend—please report it immediately to your school office, district administration, or local law enforcement. Families are also encouraged to talk with their students about not sharing personal information, home addresses, or schedules online, and to avoid reposting or engaging with threatening content, as doing so can spread fear and interfere with any investigation.
Should any new information come to our attention, we will update our families and community as quickly as possible.
Thank you for your continued partnership in keeping our schools safe.

At this time we are working with Local Law Enforcement Agencies as our school name has appeared on a list with several other area schools. We are taking every precaution to keep students and staff safe at school.
